Day 01: Chennai

Meeting and assistance on arrival and transfer to Hotel for overnight.

Arrive at Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, is famous for its temple structure of forgrandiose and architecture of the Pallava, Cheran, Chola and Pandya Dynasties. In bygone times, the Madras Presidency was one of the four divisions of British India. This city offer travelers an interesting balance of the old and the new, the artistic, historic, scenic and the academic.

Day 02: Chennai - Mahabalipuram

After breakfast sightseeing of Chennai, visit this sprawling city with its wealth of art and architecture, its National Art Gallery and Museum, Fort St. George, Marina Beach and San Thome Cathedral, among many other landmarks.

Afternoon leave for Mahabalipuram en route visiting Kanchipuram Temple.

Drive to Mahabalipuram, renowned for its stunning 7th Century shore temple, its primary rock cut temples with their distinctive five temples sculptured as rathas (chariots) and mandapams (pillared pavilions).

Visit the temple township of Kanchipuram which is known as one of India's seven sacred cities. Kanchipuram is a town with more then 200 ancient temples consisting of the ancient capital of the Chola and Pallava dynasties.

Day 03: Mahabalipuram

Today after breakfast you will visit the temples of Mahabalipuram.

Mahabalipuram famed for its beautiful 7th Century shore temple, its early rock cut temples with their characteristic mandapams (pillared pavilions), and five temples sculptured as rathas (chariots), also World Heritage Site. It is fascinating to watch the artisans at work.

Day 04: Mahabalipuram - Pondicherry

Morning drive 3 hrs to Pondicherry. On arrival check into your hotel.

Afternoon city sightseeing of Pondicherry visiting Sir Aurobindo Ashram & Auroville.

This old French colony still maintains a feeling of being in France. There is a long stretch of promenade and behind this is the French enclave with its attractive colonial buildings. Eating here is interesting as you can eat Indian French as well as straight Indian.

Day 05: Pondicherry - Thanjavur

After breakfast check out of your hotel and drive 4 hrs to Thanjavur en route visiting Darasuram, Chidambaram & Kumbakonam.

There are a number of temple towns that can be visited en route between the Coromandel Coast and Thanjavur. These include Chidambaram (temple dedicated to Shiva in his dancing form - Nataraja), Kumbakonam (dozens of temples are scattered round this busy town), Dharasuram (a superb example of a 12th century Chola temple) and Gangaikondacholapuram (another example of a Chola temple very similar in style to the one at Thanajvur).

Day 06: Thanjavur

Today we will explore the temples and other historical monuments of Thanjavur with a guide.

Thanjavur today is a pleasant, easy going town; 2000 years ago it was the capital of the Chola kings. The magnificent Brihadishwara Temple, a wonderful example of Chola architecture, is now a World Heritage site. Other places to visit in Thanjavur include the royal palace, museum and art gallery.

Day 07: Thanjavur - Trichy - Madurai

Morning drive to Madurai en route visiting Trichy & Chettinad. (Lunch can be arranged at CGH Earth Hotel called Visalam on direct payment).

Trichy has two main places of interest. The first is the temple complex of Sri Ranganathaswamy which is dedicated to Vishnu. Although this temple is considered to date back to the 10th century it has been restored and has a totally different feel to the temple at Tanjore. The other is the Rock Fort Temple perched 83m high on a rocky outcrop. There are small cave temples hewn by the Pallavas, a temple dedicated to Shiva half way up and another dedicated to Ganesh at the summit.

Day 08: Madurai - Munnar

After breakfast city sightseeing of Madurai with your guide.

The busy city of Madurai is one of the oldest in South India and has been a centre of learning and pilgrimage for centuries. The 'must see' attraction is the enormous Sri Meenakshi Temple complex in the heart of the old town. Other sites include the Market, the Thirumalai Nayak Palace, the Gandhi Memorial Museum and the Madurai Government Museum.

Afternoon drive 4 hrs to Munnar. At an altitude of around 1,600m the climate of Munnar is refreshing. The vistas are of immaculately clipped tea gardens (much of it owned by the huge Tata Corporation).

Activities in Munnar town include a visit to the Tea Museum, a weaving and papermaking project and the local fruit vegetable market.

Day 09: Munnar

After breakfast excursion to Eravikulam National Park.

From Munnar you can visit Eravikulam National Park, home to a large number of the rare and endangered Nilgiri Tahr (a kind of goat) and Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary. Eravikulam, on the other hand, is close by and a pleasant place to walk with virtually guaranteed sightings of Tahrs (in fact you are likely see so many that it is hard to believe that they are rare!).

Afternoon visit to the tea gardens and tea manufacturing units. Evening explore the market on your own.

Day 10: Munnar - Thekkady

After an early breakfast drive 3 to 4 hrs to Thekkady. On arrival check into your hotel.

Thekkady, high up in the Western Ghats, is a small town close to the entrance of Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is part of Project Tiger but tigers and leopards are rarely seen. However, it is said to offer the best chance of seeing wild elephant in the whole of India.

Day 11: Thekkady

You will be taken by car to a spice plantation just outside Thekkady. Here you will see a variety of spices being grown (pepper, chilli, cardamom, cinnamon, allspice etc) as well as coffee and vanilla. You are free to ask questions about the production of these spices.

Afternoon jungle excursion by boat with naturalist.

Day 12: Thekkady - Kumarakom

Morning nature walk into the park with your naturalist.

Return to your hotel have breakfast and check out of your hotel and drive 4 hrs to Kumarakom.

The network of waterways in Kerala stretches from Kollam in the south to Cochin in the north and includes lakes, lagoons, rivers, canals and channels. This is a beautiful area where the visitor can visit small villages and enjoy the countryside and birdlife - either from a backwater resort or from the decks of a houseboat.

Day 13: Kumarakom - Alleppey - Cochin

After breakfast at the hotel, check out and board your Kettuvallum Houseboat. It will be a day cruise with lunch on houseboat, passing through the waterways, lakes, lagoons and canals.

The houseboats mainly concentrate on an area where the waterways are fairly narrow so that you can watch life on the banks as you pass. Meals are cooked and taken on board and traditional Kerala food is served.

You will be picked on arrival at Alleppey and transferred to your hotel in Cochin.

The city of Cochin comprises three main areas - historic Fort Cochin (where many of the places of tourist interest are located), busy Ernakulam (with its large range of shops and restaurants) and the more industrial Willingdon Island.

Day 14: Cochin

After breakfast visit Mattancherry (Dutch) Palace with its marvellous murals, St Francis Church (the original burial place of Vasco da Gama), the Chinese fishing nets and Jew Town with its old Synagogue and streets full of shops selling antiques and souvenirs. The colourful 'go-downs' used by the spice traders are close by and there are two good book shops near the Synagogue. Visitors to the Synagogue are asked to dress modestly - no shorts, short skirts or sleeveless tops. Bare shoulders and midriffs are not permitted.

Day 15: Departure from Cochin

Transfer to airport for flight to onward destination. You can also fly from Cochin to Chennai and then connect your international flight.
